What is Solfest?

Solfest is Cumbria’s longest-running outdoor music festival. It’s been going since 2003, so the organisers know a thing or two about putting on a good shindig! Award-winning and family-friendly, Solfest offers an eclectic mix of music, art and more and prides itself on offering something for everyone.

Where is it?

Solfest is held at: North Lakes Country Park, Silloth, Cumbria, CA7 4NQ, just 6 miles from us here at Solway. The festival overlooks the sea, and whichever way you look you’ll get amazing views, with breathtaking views of the Northern Lake District as well as views over the Solway Firth to the mountains in Dumfries and Galloway.

When does it take place?

Solfest runs over the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Thursday 24th August to Sunday night, leaving you the Monday to travel home.

What makes it special?

Despite the fact that it gets bigger and better every year, Solfest has stayed true to its anti-corporate roots. Rather than advertising plastered everywhere, you’ll find artwork and installations. They’re champions of grassroots music, giving space for smaller ‘hidden gem’ acts alongside the ones you hear on the radio. Eclecticism and inclusion are what they aim for; with an approach that aims to span many genres and eras of music, whatever floats your boat, you’ll find something to love at Solfest.

Who’s playing?

Big names on the Solfest line-up for 2023 include The Libertines, Ocean Colour Scene, Peter Hook & The Light, Wilkinson, The Futureheads and The Bluetones (acoustic). It’s by no means a pure indie rock affair though, with acts like Dub Pistols and Dreadzone set to get you dancing, and DJ sets from the likes of Utah Saints.

Solfest is all about the little guys too, so don’t forget to check out some of the acts you’re not familiar with – you might just discover your new favourite band. With an approach that aims to span many genres and eras of music, whatever floats your boat, you’ll find something to love at Solfest.

What else is on?

Solfest is about so much more than just the music. It’s an immersive environment with everything from a kids’ creative area to an array of interactive site art and even a Healing Garden where you can meditate, do some Yoga or participate in a Shamanic ritual!

Did we mention that this year’s fancy dress theme is ‘Medieval Madness’?!

Where to stay

Seeking accommodation for Solfest? Camping on-site at Solfest is available for the full festival experience. However, if portaloos and all-night noise aren’t your thing, consider booking a caravan at Solway Holiday Park – we’re only a 12-minute taxi ride away. With caravans sleeping up to 8, our self-catering accommodation can be very affordable, especially if you’ve got a big gang together.

If you’re after a little more luxury, how about a hot tub chalet? There’s nothing quite like soaking in your private tub, soothing those muscles after a long day’s dancing! Then sleep in a proper bed and wake recharged and ready to do it all again the next day – after a nice hot shower that is…
