Dog-Friendly Days Out Near Solway

dog in field

Solway is a dog-friendly holiday park, so if you want to bring your furry friend along with you, then it’s great to know about pet-friendly places and days out so your pooch can enjoy their holidays too.

Bowness-on-Solway

Bowness On Solway – (32-minute drive)

A quieter part of Cumbria, perfect for any anxious dogs. Visit Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail. Walk along the shores of Bowness Marsh. From here you can see the Scottish mountains on a clear day – phenomenal views and a great photo opportunity. If you are a history buff then Bowness on Solway is the place for you, as it has a lot of Roman history including a Romanesque archway which marks the start and finish of the Hadrian’s Wall Path.

Carlisle Castle – (41-minute drive)

Another great bit of history to visit, this castle has dominated Carlisle for nine centuries. Throughout your visit, you can explore the medieval castle rooms that have a turbulent history with the exhibition. You can walk some of the castle walls, and learn more about the history of Carlisle and Cumbria.

The castle is of course dog friendly – they look forward to seeing your four-legged companion and have lots of options for dog-friendly days out. However, it is important to note to always keep your dog on a lead when you are in the fields with livestock and please clean up after them.

The Puzzling Place – 47-minute drive

The Lake District’s optical illusion museum is great for when the weather isn’t playing ball – a fantastic social excursion that will leave you fascinated and not quite believing your eyes. The Puzzling Place is dog-friendly, so if your pup is the adventurous kind, this might be a great idea for a rainy day.

Keswick, Lake District – 50-minute drive

An incredibly dog-friendly town that is well worth the visit, located in the Northern Lakes on the shores of Derwentwater. In this town, dogs are welcomed in pubs, shops, attractions, and public transport. Some dog-friendly activities include boat trips on Derwentwater, operated by Keswick Launch. You also have Crow Park and Hope Park. The latter has a great woodland walk plus ornamental gardens, perfect for letting your dog explore!

There is even a pet shop called Podgy Paws which has a pet-friendly information centre for more ideas of dog-friendly places in the area.

Whinlatter Forest – 50-minute drive

There’s fun for all the family at Whinlatter Forest, not a long drive from Solway Park. When you visit you can do so much more than walk, with plenty of activities that you can get up to such as Go Ape, horse-riding, hiking, guided alpaca walks, and much more. There is something for everyone and you and your furry friend can make a real day out of it.

Whinlatter is home to some stunning views and great walking trails such as the Heavy Sides trail and Revelin Moss trail. Did you know that this forest also features the longest purpose-built mountain bike trails in the Lake District?
