Keeping Your Dog Cool at Seal Bay This Summer

Hot weather can be uncomfortable for dogs, especially during the middle of the day. Choosing shaded walking routes, carrying water and taking short walks can help your four-legged friend stay happy and comfortable during your stay at Seal Bay.

Choose Cooler Times for Walkies

Early mornings and evenings are often the best times to get out and explore.

For the perfect evening stroll, head to the Medmerry Nature Reserve. The coastal path benefits from a refreshing sea breeze and offers one of the best sunset views on park. It’s a great place for both you and your dog to cool down after a warm day.

If your pup still has energy to burn, the woodland area to the left of The Boulevard entrance provides a shaded walking route away from direct sunlight, with a nearby field for zoomies.

Staying Cool Around Park

We strongly recommend avoiding walks and outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day wherever possible. Early mornings and evenings are usually more comfortable for dogs and can help reduce the risks associated with hot weather.

We understand that this isn’t always practical, and there may be occasions where you need to bring your dog around park during warmer weather. Before heading out, check the temperature of the ground, decking or sand. If the surface feels too hot to comfortably touch for several seconds, consider an alternative route or waiting until temperatures are cooler to help protect your dog’s paws. Please make sure you carry water and a bowl, or at the very least a bowl to help keep your dog hydrated. Fresh water is available for dogs at our hospitality venues during opening hours. Please speak to a member of the team if you need assistance.

Smokeys is a great place to stop and cool off. Whilst it can get busy throughout the summer, the outdoor dining area offers several shaded spots and cool concrete flooring, which can be more comfortable for your dog than hot decking.

The Viking outdoor area also offers some shaded spots around the entrance, along with dog water bowls. Both locations are positioned near open spaces, so if you’re lucky, you may even catch a refreshing sea breeze. You’ll also find QR codes on every table at both venues, allowing you to order directly to your table without needing to head inside.

Keeping Your Holiday Home Cool

If your dog is spending time relaxing in your holiday home during the day, there are a few simple ways to help keep things comfortable:

  • Close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of your holiday home
  • Open windows on opposite sides to create a cooling cross breeze
  • Open windows on the shaded side where possible
  • Turn off TVs, lights and other electronics when not in use
  • Bring a fan from home if you have one available

A cooler holiday home means a more comfortable stay for everyone, especially your dog.

Watch for Signs of Overheating

Dogs can overheat much more quickly than people.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Heavy drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Difficulty breathing

If your dog appears uncomfortable, move them somewhere cool and shaded, offer water and allow them time to rest. If symptoms persist, worsen, or you suspect heatstroke, contact a veterinary professional immediately.

If you have concerns about your dog’s health, or if you suspect heatstroke or overheating, contact a veterinary professional. During your stay, the local veterinary practice, Downland Veterinary Group Selsey, can be contacted on 01243 957100.

Need Supplies During Your Stay?

If you’re looking for treats, toys or anything to keep your dog occupied during your holiday, we recommend visiting The Pet Pantry at the bottom of Selsey High Street.

Whether you’ve forgotten a favourite toy, run out of treats or simply want to spoil your four-legged friend, you’ll find plenty of essentials for dogs of all ages.

Enjoy Summer Safely

Seal Bay is built with dogs in mind. Located behind the touring field, you’ll find our dedicated dog wash station, perfect for rinsing off dusty paws after exploring the nature reserve.

Just opposite, you’ll also discover our dog agility park, created by Petplan. It’s a great place for your dog to burn off some energy, practise their skills and enjoy some extra playtime. During the warmer months, we recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable for your dog.

Seal Bay is a fantastic place to explore with your dog, and with a little extra planning during hot weather, you can continue making the most of your time together.
